This year, some might argue that it was not a “typical” spring around Mead High School as far as athletics go. And they might be right, but after all was said and done the Panthers finished 2nd in the WIAA’s Scholastic Cup. Mead earned 1095 points. The points are awarded based on state finishes and scholastic awards(team GPA’s) for all sports and activities at Mead. Mead Football, Cheer and Drama were Academic State Champions! Panther Softball and Dance and Drill finished in 2nd place academically, while Gymnastics, Forensics and Boys Track scored 3rd place finishes for their work in the classroom. As far as team finishes go Gymnastics finished in 3rd place at state, Girls Soccer was 4th , Boys Track just finished 6th two weekends ago and Wrestling was 8th. Our 1095 points were second to Newport of Bellevue’s 1890 points who had 7 Academic Champions and State Championships in Boys and Girls Swimming. Mead has 12 top 5 finishes(tied for the most all time), 5 –firsts, 3 – seconds, and 2 – thirds.
Anyway, back to the point. After winning the Scholastic Cup for 5 years in a row(2007-8 through 2011-12) we have tended to use that as a measuring stick for our successes. The last 2 years we have finished 2nd. Respectable. We are all looking for ways to teach and coach with more effectiveness all the time. Let the fact that we are still near the top statewide in this award be the proof that we are still doing good things and working hard with our athletes. Let it also be the motivation to get back on top. Congratulations on a successful year and as some of you already gear up for the next school year, good luck! Keep up the good work.
