Mead High School
Mead High School Scholar Athletes are Katie Greene and Collin Grosse and they are accompanied by Rick Pelkie, assistant principal, and John Barrington, athletic director at Mead.
Katie Greene has a 4.0 GPA and is the daughter of Brian and Heather Holliday. She has been a member of the National Honor Society and HOSA for the past 3 years and has been chosen as Mead’s 2017 student scholar for Science. Katie will be representing Mead High School at the YMCA's Youth Leadership Spokane Banquet.
Katie has earned six varsity letters. Four in soccer, and two in golf. In soccer this fall, she led her team in scoring and to the GSL title. She was team MVP the past two years and as a senior was a Greater Spokane League 1st-Team selection and earned 2nd-Team All-State honors. She has been recognized as a WIAA Athlete of the Week and was Mead High School's NECA-IBEW Student Athlete for the fall quarter.
Katie spends her free time with younger kids. She has volunteered as a child helper at Santa Express which supports Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery and was part of a group that helped decorate the Ronald McDonald house for Christmas. She has led a group of third graders at her church's vacation Bible school and assists with Mead’s soccer camp for elementary school students.
Katie will be attending Concordia University where she was awarded both athletic and academic scholarships. She will play soccer and study pre-med.
Collin Grosse has a 3.98 GPA and is the son of Scott and Keri Grosse. He is a member of the National Honor Society, holding the office of Public Relations. He is also a member of Mead's Robotics Engineering Club.
Collin earned ten varsity letters; 4 in football, 4 in track and 2 in wrestling. In football, he served as Captain in both his junior and senior years and was twice Greater Spokane League Honorable Mention as a Linebacker and as a Tight End. This fall Collin was recognized as the NECA-IBEW Student Athlete of the fall quarter. In track, he has been a Regional Qualifier in both Shot Put and Discus. This winter, in just his second season of Wrestling, he earned First Team All-League honors, was a District Champion and placed 3rd at State. Collin was also Academic All State at 220 pounds in 2016 and 2017.
Collin has been a Boy Scout for 7 years; achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. He has volunteered and participated in many Boy Scout Service Projects including his own Eagle Project which involved designing and building an Archery Target Range for Camp Dart Lo in north Spokane. In addition, Collin has enjoyed volunteering at Second Harvest Spokane as well as helping with area youth sports.
Collin has received appointments to the United States Naval Academy and the United States Military Academy at West Point. He plans to further pursue his interest in engineering, become a pilot and play rugby or football.
